3D- Cell Vessels

In 3D we were asked to create clay (stoneware, earthenware and possibly porcelain), glass and  plaster vessels which had to be inspired by different kinds of animal or plant cells. We created our clay vessels using 3 different techniques; coiling; pinching and slabbing.

This is a sample I made using coiling.

Coiling is where you role out a piece of clay to about a 1 cm  thick, then cut-out your chosen shape for your base (e.g circle). Then role out the excess clay into either thick or thin sausages depending on how thick you want your vessel to be. Then smooth all the creases using a variety of different clay tools.

Pinching again is rolling out a slab of clay to about 1 cm, then gently pinching the edges to form a vessel shape.

For this sample I used the slabbing method.

Slabbing method again is rolling out  a 1 cm  slab of clay, and cutting out a base. You then create a second even 1cm slab which you wrap around the base to create a cylinder.

Here is my plaster vessel.

Did not enjoy making this, since it took a long time to file into shape and I do not think that it is my most interesting vessel, since it is not very detailed.

Here is my slumped glass vessel, which I consider one of my best pieces since it is very delicate and flowing.

For our final piece for this unit we had to create a series of 3 vessels, and here is the first of my series which I made using the coiling method, using earthenware.

I then covered it in a black oxide glaze.

Here is the 2nd in my series which is a stoneware clay vessel, which I made using the pinching method and again used black oxide glaze.

I also experimented with porcelain which I wish I had more time to experiment with since I found it easier to use than the other types of clay.

This is my final vessel in the series, which I made out of earthenware, using the slabbing method. This my favourite vessels since as well as looking good, it is a very functional vessel, which I'm sure I will be able to find some use for with the bezillion pencils and pens I own! XD
